Multiplication tables of 2, 5, and 10 - Primary 2

In Primary 2, students start learning the times table, starting with times tables of 2, 5, and 10.

2 times table:

1x2=2
2x2=4
3x2=6
4x2=8
5x2=10
6x2=12
7x2=14
8x2=16
9x2=18
10x2=20

5 times table:

1x5=5
2x5=10
3x5=15
4x5=20
5x5=25
6x5=30
7x5=35
8x5=40
9x5=45
10x5=50

10 times table:

1x10=10
2x10=20
3x10=30
4x10=40
5x10=50
6x10=60
7x10=70
8x10=80
9x10=90
10x10=100

In Primary 1, students are introduced the concept of multiplication, and find the result of multiplication using diagrams.

The use of diagrams help kids to understand the concept of multiplication. I'm a proponent of learning the basics of multiplication before memorizing the times table. If kids just memorize the times table, they are limited by what they have memorized, but if they understand the concept and basic, they can derive the result of any multiplication in future. It's definitely thinking long- term by letting kids learn the concept of multiplication in primary 1 first, before going into the times table.

While this chapter on multiplication of 2, 5, 10 seems like just a chapter for students to memorize, it's really not just about memorizing the times table . A look at any Singapore Primary 2 Maths textbook shows lots of examples of how the times table could be applied.
