Fractions - Primary 3

In Primary 2 Math curriculum in Singapore, students learn how to write fractions, and compare/ use fractions with the same denominator. In Primary 3 Math topic on fractions, students learn more about fractions, in particular comparing fractions with different denominator.

In this post, let's look at what's covered in the topic on fractions in Primary 3 Math.

In primary 3 Fractions, students learn about fractions with different denominator. Hence, the chapter starts with explaining to students what are equivalent fractions. (e.g. 1/2 and 2/4 are the same).

Then, students look at expressing fractions in simplest form, while doing so, they also learn how to change fractions from one denominator to another (the multiplication and division learnt in primary 2 now comes in handy).

Then students learn about the common denominator, so that they can add or subtract or compare the fractions.

To sum up, here's what's students in Singapore learn in the topic of fractions in Primary 3:
  • Equivalent fractions
  • Expressing fractions in simplest form
  • Comparing and ordering unlike fractions with denominators of given fractions not exceeding 12
  • Write the equivalent of a fraction given its numerator or denominator
  • Addition and subtraction of fraction with denominator not exceeding 12
