In the chapter on number bonds, students learn to form number bonds for numbers within 10. Number bonds teach students how numbers can be split or combined into, and are the building blocks for (more complex) addition and subtraction.
Below is an example of a number bond of 8. We know that 8 can be formed from (or split into) 5 and 3. Hence, a number bond for 8 is as follows:
8 can also be formed from 1 and 7, 2 and 6, 4 and 4.Learning of number bonds is important in the Singapore Maths curriculum, as it is the building block for more complex addition and subtraction.
