In primary 1, in the chapter on shapes, students learn rectangles, squares, triangles, and circles (including quarter circle and half circles).
In primary 2, students learn about 3-D shapes:
- cube
- cuboid
- cone
- cylinder
- sphere
Cube
A cube is made up of 6 sides (all of which are squares). All sides are of the same length. With all sides being flat, it cannot roll.
A cube has:
- 6 square (flat) sides
- 8 corners
- 12 edges
Cube: A cube is made up of 6 (square) sides |
Cuboid
A cuboid is made up of 6 sides (all of which are rectangles). You can some sides being squares as well.
With all sides being flat, it cannot roll.
cuboid |
A cuboid has:
- 6 square (flat) sides
- 8 corners
- 12 edges
Cone
A cone is made up of a circle base (flat face), with a curved surface tapering to the top. The top of the cone is called the vertex.
This 3D figure has a flat surface and a curved surface and is able to roll.

Cylinder
A cylinder is made of circles at the top and bottom. These are the two flat faces of the cylinder. In addition, the cylinder also has 1 curved surface. A cylinder can roll.
Sphere
This is a sphere. It has no flat surface, only a curved surface. A ball is the shape of a sphere, and can roll.
